US Admiral to Brief Lawmakers as Cross-Party Scrutiny Intensifies Over Vessel Attack

A high-ranking US Navy officer is scheduled to deliver a classified briefing to lawmakers overseeing the armed forces this week, as investigators probe a US strike on a boat in the Caribbean waters. The incident, which allegedly struck a craft transporting drugs, allegedly included a follow-up engagement that killed any remaining individuals.

Administration Justifies Strikes as Defensive Measures

The administration spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday asserted that the second strike was carried out “in self-defence” and in accordance with laws pertaining to military engagement. Cross-party examination has increased over a report that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order in September to attack the boat.

Democrats have argued the allegations, initially disclosed recently, could constitute a war crime, and GOP members have also expressed their concerns about the lawfulness of the attack on September 2nd. The Congressional armed services committees have initiated inquiries into the recent US armed engagements on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean.

“The Defense Secretary authorised Adm [Frank M] Bradley to execute these kinetic strikes,” stated Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to guarantee the vessel was destroyed and the danger to the United States was removed.”

In her comments to reporters, Leavitt did not challenge the report that there were individuals who survived after the initial attack. Her explanation came after former President Donald Trump a day earlier remarked he “would not have approved that – not a follow-up attack” when asked about the event.

Mounting Legislative Concern and Internal Backing

Monday evening, Hegseth wrote online: “The Admiral is an national hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I support him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A thirty days after the engagement, Bradley was promoted from head of JSOC to commander of USSOCOM.

Anxiety over the administration’s military strikes against alleged narcotics-trafficking vessels has been growing in the legislature, but particulars of this follow-on strike shocked many lawmakers from both parties and generated serious inquiries about the lawfulness of the attacks and the broader policy in the region, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The congressional members said they did not have confirmation whether last week’s report was true, and some Republicans were doubtful. Nevertheless, they stated the alleged attacking of individuals of an first missile strike presented grave issues and merited additional investigation.

White House and Pentagon Officials Reiterate Position

The White House weighed in after the president on the weekend strongly defended Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not order the death of those individuals,” Trump stated. He added, “And I believe him.”

Leavitt noted Hegseth had conversed with congressional representatives who may have voiced some worries about the reports over the past few days.

Gen Dan Caine, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, also spoke over the weekend with the bipartisan leaders leading the Congressional military committees. He reiterated “his faith in the experienced commanders at every echelon”, Caine’s spokesperson stated in a release.

The release further noted that the conversation centered on “addressing the purpose and legality of missions to interrupt illegal smuggling rings which endanger the security and stability of the Americas”.

Congressional Figures React and Pledge Probe

The top Senate Republican, John Thune, on Monday broadly supported the operations, repeating the administration position that they were essential to stop the influx of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the committees in Congress would look into what happened. “I don’t think you want to make any judgments or deductions until you have complete information,” he remarked of the September 2nd strike. “We’ll see where they point.”

After the report, Hegseth wrote on Friday that “fake news is delivering more fabricated, provocative, and disparaging coverage to undermine our remarkable service members fighting to defend the nation”.

“Our current operations in the Caribbean are lawful under both US and international law, with all actions in accordance with the law of armed conflict – and approved by the best legal advisors, throughout the military hierarchy,” Hegseth wrote.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “disgrace” over his response to detractors. Schumer called for that Hegseth release the video of the strike and appear under oath about what transpired.

The GOP lawmaker for Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the ranking member of the Senate military panel, vowed that his committee's inquiry would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll find out the facts,” he added, stating that the implications of the allegation were “serious charges”.

The September 2nd engagement was one in a series executed by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean as Trump has ordered the buildup of a fleet of warships near Venezuela, including the largest US aircraft carrier. Over eighty individuals were killed in the series of attacks.
