Two Separate Cuba-bound Relief Sailboats Listed Missing following Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated boats loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Operations Launched
The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, per a military release.
The boats had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.
The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.
"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Relief Mission
Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the island.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Wider Political Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50k operations called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from different representatives underscoring the complicated nature of relations.
Reacting to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its command to locate the boats and ensure the security of the people on board.
At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
