Trinidad and Tobago Provides US Military Access to Its Airports Amid Rising Tensions with Venezuela

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed it will allow the United States military to utilize its airports in the near future. This move follows increasing geopolitical friction between the US and its neighbor Venezuela.

New Defense System Raises Questions

This statement comes after the deployment of a sophisticated radar system at an airport in Tobago. National the government state the radar's primary purpose is for curtailing local criminal activity, emphatically denying a base for attacks against foreign states.

Government opponents caution, however, that the partnership could draw Trinidad and Tobago into ex-President Donald Trump's ongoing political strategy against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Scope of Agreement and Official Statements

In a foreign affairs statement, US operations at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, enabling resupply efforts and regular staff changes. The statement did not elaborate on the matter.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously commended US military strikes targeting suspected drug ships in regional waters, strikes that have reportedly led to multiple deaths, among them a number of Trinidadian citizens.

Initial Claims and Subsequent Revelations

Initially, Persad-Bissessar claimed a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was carrying marines to support a civilian road construction project. However, when pictures emerged of the radar installation, she admitted that no fewer than 100 marines were on the ground in the country, accompanied by the powerful radar.

The radar, identified as a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is marketed as aerial monitoring, defense, and counter-fire capabilities.

Close Neighbors

Trinidad and Tobago lies extremely close from Venezuela at their closest point. It has two primary international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

This development comes after a prior event in October, when a US naval vessel docked in Trinidad's capital, signaling the Trump administration's ramped-up military pressure towards Venezuela.

In related developments, US lawmakers have raised questions about the legality of the recent maritime strikes and have called for a review process.
