The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
