Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
