The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
