The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
