The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An new acronym surfaced several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to health professionals such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what unity resembles.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
