China Sentences Notorious Myanmar Fraud Mafia Leaders to Execution
One China's court has handed down death sentences to five top figures of a notorious Burmese organized crime group to execution as Beijing persists in its efforts on fraudulent networks in Southeast Asian region.
In all, twenty-one Bai family figures and partners were sentenced of scams, murder, assault and other crimes, said a state media report posted on the judicial website.
This clan is among a few of organized crime groups that gained influence in the early 2000s and transformed the underdeveloped backwater town of Laukkaing into a wealthy hub of gambling establishments and entertainment zones.
Over the past few years they pivoted to fraudulent schemes in which numerous of trafficked people, a large number of them from China, are ensnared, abused and forced to scam targets in unlawful activities valued at huge sums.
