California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he emphasized that any choice is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy revealed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened eliminating the power to issue trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he stated, in the wake of a recent fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding $40m from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a last month's release addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recent survey revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
